For the last instalment of our first ever Madhatter meets series we have the wonderful, Rosina Evans. Rosie is 22 years old, born in Jersey, and working as a metal works painter at Rylance Iron Works. She has grown up in an extremely creative family, all who share the same love for art, music and board sports. Growing up, Rosie and her two brothers would be entertained by their mum, walking and exploring the great outdoors to drawing and painting or making music, while their dad would get them in the ocean surfing as much as he could, so its obvious where Rosie gets her creative streak and passion for life from!

We spoke to Rosie about when she picked up skateboarding, which she said was influenced by her group of friends she was learning to mix DnB with. Her friendship group consisted of a large amount of fellow DJs, so she was drawn to hanging out with them more and more, and, when they weren’t mixing, they were skating. So, Rosie spent most of her summer doing exactly that!

As all of our guests so far have said, the male skate community have been nothing but encouraging and helpful to their fellow female boarders, which is super refreshing and a relief to hear! As we know this has not always been the case. But times are changing and these board babes are getting out there and doing what they love and we are so for it! So thank you to the boys and men out there who are offering a helping hand and welcoming the ladies with wide open arms!

“They were all so encouraging, it was a real boost to my confidence in skating and also mixing! After that I felt much more confident to head to the skate park, as well as play my first gig! So, I wouldn’t say that the male presence at the park held me back at all, I would largely blame that on lack of self confidence but that comes with your comfort and getting used to your board!”

Rosie has been drawing ever since she was young and with her family always encouraging creativity, it was inevitable that she carried on progressing. She has done a few exhibitions over the years, but never thought it would end up with a price tag on!

“A lot of my work that I display are from years of drawing and is an accumulation of thoughts and feelings that I never thought would interest other people.”

Almost all of Rosie’s pieces tell a story, so she loves exhibiting them and hearing peoples interpretations. But, you may not ever find out what they are really all about as Rosie likes to keep these personal stories of her deep questioning of reality and consciousness to herself!

We asked Rosie which pieces of extraordinary work were her favourite so far, which just so happens to be her most recent painting. “It displays a head that has been given sight from an outer source. The meaning behind this is a mixture of my fascination of the Akashic records, (which I highly recommend people look in to!) and general awakening. The message it is trying to convey stems from an idea that we are all (symbolically) robots, not thinking for ourselves and in a trance of blissful ignorance, until we put our sights into questioning this white picket fence reality we’re in! The hands over the eyes represents the information that is all around us, the higher source of knowledge! It sounds a bit crazy but its really interesting to read about, whether you believe it all or not!”

It wasn’t a shock to us when we asked Rosie what inspires her to get creative, and she answered with LIFE! Clearly a deep thinker and always taking in what is going on around her, we loved the way Rosie puts this crazy world into art form. You will probably notice that there are a lot of hands, eyes and faces used as the main focus when you delve into Rosie’s work, this is because she says they’re a good starting point to progress into something a lot more substantial and compelling.

There’s limited places to skate in Jersey unfortunately, with street skating being frowned upon over here and the skate park not offering great facilities (fingers crossed we get that new park soon!). When asking Rosie where her favourite place to skate was she answered that the park was still her favourite place because even though it can get really crowded, there’s always someone there to make you feel a bit more comfortable, which is what its all about really, right? Rosie is currently skating a subterranean deck, which you can find at our good friend Karl Paynes shop, CONSUME STORE on Halkett Street.

If you want to continue following Rosie’s expressive artwork and story telling through painting, you can follow her on Instagram on @rat_zz. As for her musical passion in mixing, she wants to keep that as more of a hobby, but who knows maybe one day we can watch that journey too!

And to finish our time off with this captivating woman, we asked her why she chose Brixton and Volcom as her favourite brands from Madhatter. Understandably, she loved that they matched her androgynous style, the flattering fits with a laid back style, so as brands they fit perfectly into her wardrobe. She also said that both brands are hard to get wrong, their items range from active to fashionable so are easy to work with.

Thanks again Rosie for taking part and closing off this season of Madhatter Meets! You were definitely worth the wait and we were buzzing after spending time with you and hearing your imaginative view on life. The true definition of a creative babe! xxx

Epic location, epic produce and an epic woman, this meet up was a real treat for us! We headed over to see Nina Blake and her super cool tomato farm to find out a little more about what they do up there and what tasty treats they make with their gorgeous, organic veg! If you are apart of the surfing community, then you will already know that the whole Blake family are surfing legends over here! But if you want to find out a little more about Nina and her family run business then sit down and have a read about what we spoke about when we hung out.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi, I am Nina Blake, born in Jersey and living here growing tomatoes with my family and making ketchup in my spare time.

How long have you been surfing for?
I have been surfing since I can remember. Growing up always revolved around the beach and surfing as my family are all lovers of the sea.

What/who got you into surfing?
My dad and brother got me into it, I either got the choice to sit on the beach and watch, or go in and try! I took the latter option, it seemed way more fun, and thankfully I loved it and still do 😍

Is it tough being a female surfer in a largely Male populated sport?
I have never really thought much into it, as growing up I have always been use to surfing and travelling with my brother and his friends, who were always been really supportive and kind.

Nowadays I love surfing with my brother and boyfriend as it is always a great opportunity as I always try to push myself in the water with them. I have also been lucky as I have always had a good group of girlfriends who I have always surfed with to, which I love. It’s always fun surfing with the girls. I definitely feel times are changing now. I sometimes paddle out and there are more females than males!

What’s your favourite board to ride?
My 9’3 Joel Tudor crescent tail and 6’6 Bing Raven. They are the dream!

Where is your favourite surf spot in jersey?
St Ouens bay, always! It’s beautiful and there are such a good variety of waves. The bay is always changing shape, so every surf is different.

What inspires you to get creative with your produce?
My customers. They inspire me so much. I love chatting to them when I get the opportunity to do a market. You instantly have a connection over tomatoes, ketchup or surplus! I love the passion and energy from talking to people with similar interests. It’s so contagious. It inspires me to go off and experiment to create new products and ideas to evolve the business.

Can you tell us the story behind The Green House Project?
It started back in 2014, I have always dipped in and out of helping on the family farm but started full time in 2014. We prodomiently grow tomatoes and when your with the produce all the time, you really start to notice not every tomato is perfect for the shelf due to many different variations. BUT those tomatoes which don’t make the cut are perfect to be mulched into delicious sauces and ketchups!

It was sad to see such wonderful tasty produce go to waste and not be utilised. So I combined my passions for food and cooking and the green house project was born!
Focusing on 4 products; 2x sauces and 2x ketchups. They are all made using surplus produce from our farm with no added sugar, so you can feel great when eating it!
it is a important part of our farm, as it is so wonderful to see the majority of our produce being utilised in some shape or form and staying within the island and out the waste!

Have you got a social media platform for your work?
I run off Instagram @thegreenhouseproject

Why did you pick this brand and what stands out about it for you?
Rip curl has always been a solid brand that has always stood out throughout my surfing, for its hard wearing products and commitment to the sport.
It has more recently over the years captured my eye for its bold and more retro patterns, which I love.

Thanks again for having us Nina! And thanks for the yummy tomato snacks, best tomatoes ever!
You can find The Green House Project Sauces + Ketchup at these local stores, Co ops, Grandmarches, Woodside Farm shop.

Introducing Laetitia Green, or better know to her friends as, Tish. Jersey born, 20 years old, and working between two jobs, this girl still finds time to fit her skateboarding and creative passion in.

Tish has been skating since lockdown but says it has always appealed to her, she found it difficult to start not having any friends in the skate scene, so decided to take to the power of social media and ask one of her followers if anyone had a spare board she could borrow or buy cheap! Luckily, a friend gifted an old deck and off to the skate park they went, instant love for the sport and a group of new friends to support her. And the rest is history.

“Reflecting back on it now, I couldn’t imagine where or who I would be if I hadn’t posted that Instagram story. It opened up a whole new circle of people to me which was very refreshing!”

We asked Tish her opinion on being a female skater in a largely male populated sport and if it was tough, which she said it wasn’t as most the guys are more than happy to help you out and cheer you on. Tish did say it can be a little intimidating jumping into a male dominated sport, but once you step out of your comfort zone and get chatting to all the guys, you realise that most of the thoughts and worries are all in your head!

Tish is riding an 8.25 RIP N DIP Board, and she says her favourite place to skate largely depends on how she’s feeling “Sometimes I prefer being somewhere quiet where I can practice tricks, I also love the town skate park as you can go on the ramps and there’s a lot more obstacles you can work around. Plus its a nice place to skate and socialise with other skaters.”

If you haven’t already guessed by the gorgeous images of Tish on her decks, her creative passion is mixing music, and she’s pretty damn good at it too!! Unbelievably, Tish only started mixing at the beginning of March this year. But, has been listening to Drum and Bass since she was 15.

Her passion for Drum and Bass in general inspires her to get creative and she says she always has ideas running through her head of how to layout her next mix, and is constantly creating in her head something completely new out of mixing two different tunes together, which takes her straight back to her mixing table as soon as she can get there. Tish follows a lot of other artists mixing journeys that she looks up to, seeing what they are doing to get creative always inspires her to push herself and adapt her life to make sure she can mix as much as possible to get where she wants to be.

If you want to check out Tish’s amazing music, you can find her mixes on soundcloud under Ana Crusis, or watch her live streams on Instagram (@Ana_crusis_) and Facebook (Ana Crusis) which she uses as her general platform to premote herself and what she’s getting involved in.

When asking Tish why she chose Vans as her brand in the style pick from the shop she proudly stated “I’ve been repping Vans since day one! Its always been one of my favourite brands and there’s no other shoe I’d rather skate in. I feel so comfortable in them, especially when I’m skating. Even when I’m not skating, you’ll always find me repping my vans old schools over any other shoe!”

Thanks again Tish for having us round and giving us a mini rave at your house! We loved every minute of it and can’t wait to follow your mixing journey.

Meet Jasmin Taylor! She is 20 years old and currently working in the radiology department at our local hospital here in Jersey. We met up at the beginning of October to have a chat and take some stunning images of her doing her thing. We also asked Jasmin to pop into our town shop to pick her favourite outfits from her favourite brand in the shop. Jasmin picked Volcom, telling us her dad has worn it since she was a kid, so it has always stuck out to her as a brand. She thinks all Volcom clothing is super comfy, long lasting with sick designs too! We totally agree Jasmin, Volcom kill it in all areas!

Jasmin has been skating since the beginning of lockdown, although has had a skateboard since she was younger, she wasn’t confident with cruising about. But since April she has been getting out most days when she can.

We asked Jasmin who and what got her into skating to which she answered “I’ve always been around people who skate ever since I was maybe 14/15, so I see the happiness people get from it. I’ve travelled around a bit too and everywhere I go I’ve always been fascinated watching people skate and then this year I went to a big skate park in Bali and I just decided when I was coming home I need to pick it up.”

We also asked Jasmin whether or not its tough being a female skater in a largely male populated sport. She answered with the following, “In my opinion it is a little bit hard, because even though most people are usually so supportive, I do find there are some people out there who think girls just skate for the “wrong” reasons and sometimes that can be quite frustrating. Most people are great and always up for helping! It would be super sick if more females started skating, hyping each other up and instead of comparing themselves to others and seeing it as a competition, just doing it for the pleasure of it! I get so much joy out of skating and I’ve not been doing it long, I’d love to see females have the same attitude towards each other.”

With a huge passion for music from since she can remember, Jasmin listens to her tunes whenever she gets the chance, which always gets her keen to try something new and do something creative, instead of just staying indoors doing nothing. We loved this about Jasmin and thought she represented our brand and what we stand for perfectly.

As well as clearly being a talented skater (even if it has only been a matter of months since she started!) Jasmin is also rather crafty, making dream catchers for her friends, mostly as gifts for when they venture off to study or travel. We are hoping she expands these beautiful creations soon so we can all get our hands on one! Look out on social media for Jasmin expanding herself as a skater and creative, we sure as hell can’t wait to see what she gets up to in the future!

Thanks again Jasmin! You totally smashed it as our first guest xxx

During the month of October, we have been hanging out with some of our local, badass, female boarders! These incredible women are not only a part of our surf and skate community, but they also have a creative side hustle. We’ve spent some time getting to know what they get up to when they’re not riding their boards, and what it’s like being a female in a largely male populated sport.

So, welcome to “MADHATTER MEETS…” a new project, all about joining forces with other small businesses and creative minds to promote one another and learn more about our community. In times like this, it’s so important we are supporting each other and recognising what an amazing bunch of people we have living on this epic island.

Stay tuned and look out for our first guest next week…
